Your Virtual Marathon Checklist

To help ensure you have an amazing experience at the 2020 Virgin Money London Marathon, we’ve put together a checklist of things you need to do, and divided it into four sections so you can plan your time:

  1. The week before
  2. The night before
  3. On the day
  4. After the finish

Whether you’re a marathon veteran or a 26.2-mile first-timer, please read every item on the checklist to ensure you’re well prepared for Marathon Day on Sunday 4 October.

The Official Virgin Money London Marathon App powered by TCS is available to download now.

The email you receive will include your personal log in details that you’ll need to record your run, as well as everything else you need to know about the Official App and tracking.

Your Virtual Marathon Checklist

1. The week before

Your Running Numbers

You will receive a pack containing two Running Numbers in the post – one to pin to the front and one to pin to the back of your top on Marathon Day. If you have not received your pack containing your Running Numbers by Wednesday 30 September, please email replacementpacks@londonmarathonevents.co.uk with your full name and current address to request a replacement.

If you have not received your Running Numbers by Saturday 3 October, you will be able to download them to print at home. We will email you next week to let you know how to do this.

International Runners: You will receive a pack containing two Running Numbers in the post – one to pin to the front and one to pin to the back of your top on Marathon Day.

It is now too late to send replacement numbers to international addresses so, if you have not received your Running Numbers by Saturday 3 October, you will be able to download them to print at home. We will email you to let you know how to do this, or you can download one below.

Plan your race

Decide on your route, playlist, pacing and fuelling strategies and any kit that you’ll carry with you, such as a water bottle or race belt, in advance. Please do not try to run the traditional London Marathon route as this will not be available on Sunday 4 October. For more detailed advice on planning your virtual marathon, check out 26 additional tips here.

Plan your kit

Check the weather forecast and have a kit option ready for every eventuality, wherever you are in the world.

Plan your start time

You will have almost 24 hours to complete the virtual Virgin Money London Marathon, starting from 00:00:00 BST on Sunday 4 October. If you’re an international runner, please use the world clock to double check that your run will take place between 00:00:00 BST and 23:59:59 BST on Sunday 4 October.

Download the Official Virgin Money London Marathon App powered by TCS

You will need to track your run using the Official App powered by TCS, which will provide you with the most enhanced experience of the virtual Virgin Money London Marathon. The Official App is available to download now.

When you log into the Official App, please ensure that you do so on the device you will be carrying with you during the virtual event. If you log into the app on any other device by mistake, you will need to contact our Customer Services team via this form.

Plan to track your run on a secondary device

As well as tracking your run on the Official Virgin Money London Marathon App powered by TCS, we recommend you also track your 26.2 miles on a secondary device, such as a GPS watch or Strava, as a back-up option on Marathon Day. You will be able to upload the evidence from your secondary device through the Official App.

Are you fit to run?

Take a look at our marathon medical advice to ensure you’re fit to take part in the virtual Virgin Money London Marathon on Sunday 4 October. You should not take part if you are not confident of completing 26.2 miles safely, or if you were hospitalised with Covid-19. If in doubt, please consult your GP.

Nominate an emergency contact

Ask a friend or family member to be your emergency contact during the event. Write their details on the back of your Running Numbers and let them know the route you plan to take and your rough pacing plan.

Follow social distancing guidelines

If you are planning to run in a group, please observe the current government guidelines on social distancing. Please ensure your supporters also observe the guidelines.

Shout about your participation

Let your friends and family know you’re taking on the virtual Virgin Money London Marathon on Sunday 4 October. Encourage them to support you in person and with charity fundraising on the day, and to track your progress on the Official App powered by TCS, which they’ll be able to download next week.

2. The night before

Your evening meal

Eat a meal of high-carb, low-fat foods that you’re used to. Don’t try anything new!

Lay out your kit

Pin your Running Numbers to the front and back of your top (remembering to fill in the emergency contact details on the back of both) and lay out everything you’ll wear or carry with you on Marathon Day. See our 26 top tips for running the virtual marathon for more details.

Log into the app

Double check that you’re logged into the Official Virgin Money London Marathon App powered by TCS (see above) on the device that you will be running with.

Charge your phone

Make sure your phone and spare battery pack are fully charged, or on charge, before you go to bed.

3. On the day

Eat breakfast

Try to eat breakfast two to four hours before you start.

Check your phone

Check that your phone and spare battery pack are fully charged and that you’re logged into the Official App so you’re ready to start your 26.2-mile challenge.

Starting your run

When you’re ready to start, go to the ‘My Run’ page in the app and hit the ‘Get started’ button and then ‘Start My Run’ so the app can start tracking your progress.

Using the app

You can turn the audio experience on and off in the app using the audio slider on the top right of your My Run profile. You can also pause and resume your run as often as you like, but please note your official time will be based on the elapsed time between when you start and finish your run – not your active time.

Follow your nutrition strategy

Make sure you eat and hydrate according to the fuelling plan you made in the run-up to Marathon Day. Further information on nutrition and hydration can be found here.

4. After the finish

Share your achievement

Once you’ve finished 26.2 miles, the app will stop tracking and display a message to let you know you’ve completed the event. You’ll also unlock your certificate and an exclusive finisher selfie frame – don’t forget to take a Finish Line selfie and share it with us on social media @LondonMarathon using #LondonMarathon and #The40thRace so we can celebrate your achievement with you!

Check your run has tracked

If you find there were any issues with the tracking of your run on the Official App, you will have the opportunity to upload the evidence from your secondary device via the Official App.

Medal & T-shirt

We will start to send out the all-important medals and T-shirts to all finishers from Monday 5 October and we expect to have sent all of them by Monday 12 October. If you haven’t received your medal and T-shirt by Saturday 31 October, please contact our Customer Services team.
