Championship Entry

Qualifying for a Championship place in the 2022 London Marathon

The Championship qualification period for the 2022 London Marathon opened on 1 January 2021 and will close on 31 December 2021. Entries for the 2022 Championship will open later in the year

Your qualifying performance for a marathon (or half marathon) must be run at an event that has a certified course. Race courses must be certified by UKA, the Association for International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), or a national governing body for distance running for the country in which the race is held.

Additionally, you must be registered with your national governing body (ie England Athletics, Scotland Athletics, Welsh Athletics, Athletics Northern Ireland) otherwise we will not be able to accept your application. If you are unsure whether or not you are registered, please check with your national governing body.

Please note that all runners in the Championship start zone must wear their club vest.

Virtual 2021 Virgin Money London Marathon

You may also apply for a Championship place by running the qualifying time (from the table above) in the virtual 2021 Virgin Money London Marathon on Sunday 3 October 2021.

However, if your only qualification time is from the virtual 2021 Virgin Money London Marathon, you’ll also need to submit evidence of an ‘in-person’ half marathon time that meets the qualifying time displayed in the table above.

You must have run this half marathon time during the same qualifying period: 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2021 at an event with a certified course.

British Championships entrants in the 2021 Virgin Money London Marathon

This year, all Championship participants aged over 40 are automatically entered into the inaugural Abbott World Marathon Majors Wanda Age Group World Championships, which is happening as part of the 2021 Virgin Money London Marathon.

The Championships will feature the world’s best runners over the age of 40 who have qualified through performances in 175 events across six continents as part of the Age Group World Rankings.

A specially designed medal will be given all finishers in the Championships, in addition to their Virgin Money London Marathon finisher’s medal, and the winner in each age group will be crowned World Champi
on.

How do I claim my Abbott World Marathon Majors Wanda Age Group World Championships medal?

When you visit the Virgin Money London Marathon Running Show at ExCeL London to collect your bib (running) number, you will be issued with an additional bib to wear on your back, which will be printed with your last name and age category. You must wear this bib to be part of the Age Group World Championships race and listed in the official results – that’s all you need to do to be part of this exciting new addition to the 2021 Virgin Money London Marathon.

On Marathon Day, your start position will still be on the Blue Start with all the other British Championships runners.

What if I want to opt out?

Simply tell us that want to opt out of the Abbott World Marathon Majors Wanda Age Group World Championships when you register at the Virgin Money London Marathon Running Show. The back bib will not be issued, and you will not appear in the Age Group World Championship results, but you will still feature in the overall and British Championships results for the Virgin Money London Marathon.
