We are a very enthusiastic non elite club attracting members of all abilities. We were founded in 1980 by a group of runners who broke away from the more Track and Field orientated Cardiff AAC at the height of the first running boom. Our name is derived from the casino of the same name in which one of our founder members is a partner. Several of our founding members are still active in the club.
We are mainly a Road Race and Cross Country club although we also have a thriving Triathlon section. Many joggers have joined us and through friendly rivalry have achieved success at County and International level.
Every year we organise a trip to the Virgin London Marathon and 20-30 members compete. One member, Jeff Aston is a Virgin London Marathon ‘Ever Present’.
Our flagship event is the 200+ Miles Castles Relay run over two days each year in June. It attracts teams from all over the UK and we regularly have entries from Europe and the USA. We organise four other races in the course of the year. We also organise a Triathlon series of events in the summer.
We currently have 200 active members mainly from the Cardiff area but also have members in France, Switzerland and the USA. We organise social events throughout the year and organise several week-end trips for training and social purposes. We do not actively recruit junior members since our club meets on licensed premises. Lady members are especially welcome and we currently have in excess of 50 lady members.
Come and join us, you wont regret it!!
Your questions answered!
Where can I find you?
Our club night is on Thursdays at Llandaff RFC. We meet at 6.30 and run at 7pm. New members have mentors who accompany them on their first few runs. A slower more social group sets off at 6.40. We have several runs varying in distance from 4 to 10 miles.
What training do you do?
We have one formal training night in the week. There are several coaches in the club and experienced older members who are only too willing to help new members. Two training groups meet at Leckwith Athletic Stadium on Tuesday evenings at 6pm for track work.
We have a large training group on Thursday evenings but it is not necessary to commit to them. We tend to have a social evening afterwards in the bar of Llandaff RFC where cooked meals are available. Several groups of members meet at weekends for long runs and one of our members organises a 20 mile run prior to the Virgin London Marathon.
Can I turn up or do I have to join first?
Please feel free to come and run with us. We often have members from other clubs on our Thursday runs. We welcome runners of all ages and abilities and there is no pressure to join. If you do join, we give you your club vest after you have run three races for the club.
I am only looking to train for the Virgin London Marathon, how will I find others to train with?
We usually have 20 – 30 runners in the Virgin London Marathon whose pace varies from 2hrs30min to 5 hours plus. Our members are friendly and many members meet for Sunday morning long runs though there is also a comprehensive race calendar in South Wales and over the border in England.
