Samuel Wanjiru RIP

16 May 2011

Samuel Wanjiru 1986 - 2011

Olympic, World Marathon Majors, London and Chicago Champion – Samuel Wanjiru Dies

The world of athletics and marathon running was shocked to hear the news that Samuel died in the early hours of May 16th following a fall from his balcony at home in Nyahururu in Kenya.

Samuel's Olympic win in Beijing against a star studded field that included Martin Lel and Tsgeye Kebede in 2.06.32  was viewed by many as the greatest Olympic Marathon performance in the history of the games.

He followed this up with wins in London in 2009 and Chicago in 2009 and 2010 and was World Marathon Majors Champion twice. He also won the Fukuoka Marathon in Japan in 2007 and was 2nd in London in 2008.

Those that have met Samuel will know that he was a great man, fun loving and articulate and he will be immensely missed. Samuel was one of a handful of runners that had a genuine chance of breaking the World Marathon Record and had said this was one of his life's aims.  Sadly we will never know...  The London Marathon team will miss a great Champion. RIP
